Musical style and reception. . .

Alter Bridge's music is often characterized and described as "heavy, yet melodic." Their music has been listed under several genres including rock, hard rock, alternative metal, post-grunge, heavy metal, and progressive metal. Alter Bridge has been compared to bands such as 3 Doors Down, Default, Five.Bolt.Main, Velvet Revolver, Black Stone Cherry, Creed, Boston, Submersed, Stone Sour, andSevendust. The band members have cited several artists including Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Jeff Buckley, Iron Maiden, Guns N' Roses,Soundgarden, AC/DC, Living Colour, and Slayer as influences.
Alter Bridge's music is co-written by Kennedy and Tremonti and arranged by Alter Bridge and the band's lyrics are written primarily by Kennedy, although Tremonti wrote most of the lyrics and all of the music on One Day Remains. The lyrics on the first two Alter Bridge albums mainly touch on hope, regret, and overcoming sadness, grief, loneliness, pain, and addiction. The subject matter on their third release, AB III, is noticeably darker, with lyrical themes mostly based on struggling with faith and a loss of innocence, as well as other dark themes including apathy and struggling with the concepts of death and mortality.
Despite recent acclaim,Alter Bridge received generally negative to mixed reviews upon their first album's release in 2004. Because three of Alter Bridge's members Mark Tremonti, Brian Marshall, and Scott Phillips are also members of Creed, the band was initially described as Creed with a different singer, also due to what some critics noted as similarities to Creed's music early on. Although Alter Bridge rejects this description, their debut album, One Day Remains, was reviewed negatively by some in this manner. For example, a reviewer for Slant Magazine criticized the album because "the dated Creed sound" is demonstrated instead of showing Alter Bridge "[making] a conscious effort to distance themselves from the sound of their former band." Allmusic said that "Alter Bridge is happier courting Creed's constituency than establishing the promise of its more metal side." However, other reviewers praised Alter Bridge for striving to become "a new name and niche in this music scene and not to be considered Creed with a new singer."

Alter Bridge has since received considerable praise from music critics and several notable musicians, including Chickenfoot and ex-Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony, who expressed interest in having Alter Bridge open for Van Halen on tour in 2004.Critics have often noted the vocals and guitar work in Alter Bridge's music. Tremonti says that the band made a conscious effort to not sound like Creed with their second album, Blackbird. The "heavier and more mature" sound and singer Myles Kennedy's full integration into the band as a guitarist and songwriter, which contributed to an evolution away from the Creed-influenced sound as regarded to be heard on their first album, were positively noted by critics. Blackbird is generally considered by fans to be Alter Bridge's best album. The band's third album, AB III, a looseconcept album, has been praised for showing a distinction from Creed by many.
